Sue’s martial arts journey began at a young age, when she began training in Traditional Ju Jitsu after a difficult upbringing. A victim of bullying and childhood trauma, including losing family members in a tragic house fire and caring for her disabled father, Sue through herself into martial arts — both as a self-defence mechanism and a form of escapism.

Sue said: “My childhood was very traumatic and martial arts most definitely saved my life. I started out at Croxteth Ju-Jitsu club with Alan Pierpoint, Alan Lynch and John Heynes, then at Lowlands Ju-Jitsu Academy with Kenny Blundell Sensei, and have since had a colourful career. I’m a Shihan, 7th Degree blackbelt, was a Regional Officer for Ju-jitsu in Liverpool and am owner of Team Mushin CIC.”

She continued: “I opened Muga Mushin Ryu Ju-Jitsu school just after my father passed away in 2011 and my key aim was to help kids through martial arts the same way it helped me. The idea is to get kids off the streets and into the gym, teaching them values such as discipline, respect, integrity and resilience and there have been some amazing success stories — from kids with special needs to kids quitting drugs and crime.”

One parent, Sophie, said: “My 8 year old daughter Katie has been at Mushin combat academy for over a year now. She goes to Junior Jujitsu once a week. I put Katie into Mushin combat academy to help with her confidence and social skills. Sue is an amazing teacher. she is helpful, passionate and a great role model. Katie looks forward to coming to class every week.”

Another, Sara, said: “I walked into Mushin 9 years ago and was nervous but Sue and the team were so welcoming and great with my boys. My daughter joined, and eventually I had a go and loved it too. The work ethic they put into Mushin is the best — the faith, the trust, the loyalty. It becomes your family in many ways and I would recommend Mushin to anyone.”

Sue’s approach at Team Mushin is an all encompassing one — teaching both children and adults the philosophies of Japanese Ju-Jitsu whilst focusing on physical, mental and spiritual wellbeing. Philosophies include ‘if it doesn’t challenge you, it won’t change you’ and ‘there is no losing, you either win or you learn’.

Sue said: “Over the past forty years I have seen many children and adults struggle with mental health and the stigma that went with it, thankfully times have now changed and it’s great to see so many people working together through social media to support each other. I too have struggled however I firmly believe that helping others in turn helps ourselves.”

She is now also a practicing Buddhist after becoming Ordained in 2014. Yet it’s her work with children that gives her the most satisfaction and she helped pioneer the Ju Jitsu curriculum within the education system.

Sue said: “I’m really proud of what I’ve achieved over the years and to have opened my own school is a dream come true. We’ve been a CIC since 2015 and always struggled for funding but this year it was great to receive funding from Fight For Peace and Sport England.”

She continued: “We want to help as many kids and adults as possible. Our plan for this year is to secure more funding so that we can employ more coaches and ultimately help more people through martial arts. The mental, physical and spiiritual benefits are amazing and it can help get people on a good path.”
